About
Harbor Child Care Programs uses The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers and Twos, as well as for preschool children. The program uses a child-centered approach where teachers and parents partner to support each child’s interests, with learning through play and an investigative method that uses studies to promote cognitive, physical, language, and social-emotional development. The curriculum integrates science, math, social studies, art, and technology in each study and follows a daily schedule that offers a consistent structure for routines and rituals.
• Ages: 12 weeks–12 years old
Harbor Child Care began in 1973 as a day care center with eight children in a home in Sea Cliff, founded by Jill Rooney. Harbor Child Care has been teaching and caring for children throughout Nassau County for nearly 50 years and has provided early childhood education and services for over 20,000 young children. It is one of the largest not-for-profit organizations dedicated to full-day child care, early childhood, and school-age education on Long Island. The mission of Harbor Child Care is to create life-long learners and to uphold the principle that all children in its care have the right to a safe, healthy, and educationally enriching environment.
The program follows staff-to-child ratios set by the regulations of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Harbor Child Care provides breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. The organization states that every child deserves access to high-quality early education regardless of family financial situation and offers a Scholarship Fund that helps ease the financial burden on parents. Since 1973, Harbor Child Care has supported more than 20,000 children. The organization cites research indicating that investing $1 in early education returns $4–$16 to communities.
Harbor Child Care lists partnerships and affiliations that include the Child & Adult Care Food Program, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Mineola Union Free School District, Herricks Union Free School District, ICCD Long Island Regional Early Childhood Leadership Initiative, Long Island Regional Technical Assistance Center (LIRTAC), NY Early Childhood Professional Development Institute at CUNY, Long Island Pre-K Initiative, United Way of Long Island, Mineola Chamber of Commerce, Island Harvest, Inter Agency Council of Glen Cove, Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, Child Care Council of Nassau, and the Chamber of the Willistons.
